1918-1992
Born in Brooklyn and spending his adult life in Manhattan, Ernest (Ernie) Stone lived and captured an iconic era in New York.
In the late 1950’s Stone was a top 10 disc jockey as one of WMCA’s ‘Good Guys’. He continued as a broadcast personality on Channel 13 and performed as an actor and founding member of Off Broadway’s respected repertory company New Stages, presenting works of Sartre, Garcia-Lorca and Stavis, among others.
As a self-taught artist he produced prolifically as a photographer and later in collage.
His photography presents a study of New York in the last century—existing on the razor’s edge between the classical and the modern. Politics, counterculture, the transformation of social codes and their expression in the landscape of the city itself are all part of his oeuvre.
Except for a solo photography exhibition entitled “New York A to Z” at the Rina Gallery in 1975, Stone’s extensive archive has remained largely undiscovered.
